Building a night sky library for episodic work

How a reusable library of painted skies and a shared relight setup kept an eight-episode series consistent on a tight schedule.

Episodic schedules reward reuse. On a recent series with hundreds of day-for-night shots, the biggest time saving came from building assets once and sharing them across every episode.

The sky library

We painted a set of night skies at different moon phases and cloud densities, each with separated star, cloud and glow layers so compositors could balance them per shot.

The relight template

A shared compositing template handled the hard part: darkening plates, cooling highlights and adding interactive moonlight on faces and vehicles.

Supervising for consistency

The supervisor reviewed every episode end to end, not just shot by shot, so scenes shot weeks apart still felt like the same night.
