The on-set data checklist we take to every shoot

HDRIs, lidar, witness cameras and clean plates — the reference our supervisors capture so post runs smoothly.

A VFX supervisor on set has one job: make sure post has everything it needs. Here is the checklist we work from.

For every set-up

  • Camera data — lens, focal length, focus distance, height and tilt.
  • HDRI — a bracketed 360° capture from the subject’s position.
  • Grey and chrome balls — a short pass at the end of each set-up.
  • Clean plate — matching camera move without actors whenever possible.

For complex shots

  • Lidar of the set or location.
  • Witness cameras for body and facial performance capture.
  • Texture photography of anything that will be extended or rebuilt.

Working around the crew

Good on-set supervision is invisible to the crew. We capture reference in the gaps, not at the cost of the schedule.

Most of this takes seconds per set-up when it is planned. The supervisor agrees the plan with the first AD before the shoot, so reference passes are scheduled rather than squeezed in.
