Light and air through the roof

Many Canberra homes have rooms that never see direct light, such as central hallways, ensuites and walk-in robes. A skylight is often the simplest way to change that. On the other side of the equation, roof spaces in summer can reach temperatures well above the outside air, and that heat works its way down through the ceiling. Roof vents give it somewhere to go.

Skylight options

  • Fixed skylights – a sealed glazed unit for steady natural light.
  • Opening skylights – manual, electric or solar-powered units that also let warm air escape.
  • Tubular skylights – a reflective tube that brings light through tight roof spaces into small rooms.

We discuss glazing options with you, because the orientation of the roof affects how much heat and glare comes through.

Vents that suit your roof

Wind-driven whirlybirds work well on exposed roofs, while solar-powered vents keep moving air on still days. We position vents high on the roof, away from the prevailing rain direction, and make sure there is enough air coming in through the eaves so the vents can do their job.

Flashing is what keeps it dry

Every hole in a roof is a possible leak point. We use flashing kits designed for your specific tile or sheet profile, rather than relying on sealant alone. The same care applies to chimneys: old cement or lead flashings often crack or come away from the brickwork, and renewing them is one of the most common fixes on older homes in the Inner South.

If you already have a skylight that leaks or has gone cloudy, we can reflash it or replace the dome without starting from scratch.

What's Included

  • Fixed, opening and remote-control skylights
  • Tubular skylights for small or awkward spaces
  • Solar-powered and wind-driven roof vents
  • Exhaust fan ducting through the roof
  • Chimney and flue flashing replacement
  • Replacement of cloudy or leaking skylight domes

Why It Matters

Brighter rooms

A skylight can light a dark hallway, bathroom or kitchen without adding a window to the wall.

Cooler roof space

Vents remove the hot air that builds up under the roof in summer, helping insulation work and reducing the load on cooling.

Done in a day

Most skylight and vent installs are finished in a single visit, including the ceiling cut-out and flashing.

How the Job Runs

  1. Step 1: Choose the location

We check rafters, wiring and the roof surface to find a position that gives good light and avoids framing problems.

  2. Step 2: Cut and frame

We open the roof and ceiling, trim between rafters and build a light shaft where one is needed.

  3. Step 3: Flash and seal

The unit is installed with a flashing kit matched to your tile or sheet profile, then sealed and checked from above and below.

  4. Step 4: Finish and clean up

We fit the ceiling diffuser or trim, test any opening mechanism and remove all dust and debris.

Materials We Use

  • Double-glazed and laminated skylight units
  • Tubular skylight kits
  • Solar and wind-driven roof ventilators
  • Tile and metal profile flashing kits
  • Lead and soft aluminium flashing

Skylights & Vents: Common Questions

A well-installed skylight should not. Most leaks we repair come from poor flashing or sealant used in place of a proper flashing kit.

It can if the glass is unsuitable. We recommend low-e or tinted glazing for north and west-facing roofs, and opening units to vent heat.

It depends on roof area and how much air can enter through eaves. We calculate this on site rather than using a fixed number.
