Brush Lettering or Pointed Pen: Which Should You Learn First?

It is the question we hear most from new students, and the honest answer is that both are a wonderful place to begin. They simply suit different people.

Brush pens are portable and forgiving. There is no ink to dip and no nib to catch on the paper, so you can practise on the sofa and see results in an evening. They are perfect for cards, journals and bouncy modern lettering.

Pointed pen takes a little more patience, but it rewards you with the fine hairlines and elegant contrast of Copperplate and Spencerian scripts. If wedding stationery or formal invitations are your goal, it is worth the effort.

Our advice? Start with whichever makes you excited to sit down. The skills you build — rhythm, spacing and pressure control — carry over to the other tool.

You can try both in a single weekend with our Modern Brush Lettering and Pointed Pen Foundations classes.
