Walk into any art shop and the wall of pointed pen nibs can feel overwhelming. The good news is that you only need a handful to learn the craft, and most of the professionals we know still reach for the same five.
Start with a Nikko G. It is stiff, forgiving and lasts for weeks, which makes it ideal while you are still learning how much pressure to apply. Once your downstrokes feel even, try a Zebra G for slightly smoother hairlines.
When you are ready for more contrast, a Leonardt Principal or a Brause 66EF will reward a light hand with the thinnest hairlines you have ever drawn. They are delicate, so keep them for finished pieces rather than practice sheets.
Finally, keep a Brause Rose in the drawer for larger lettering on envelopes and signs. Its flexibility gives dramatic swells without needing a heavy hand.
Want to try them all before you buy? Every seat in our Pointed Pen Foundations class comes with a full nib sampler to take home.
