Interior Detailing: What Does It Actually Include?

“Interior detail” can mean anything from a quick vacuum to a full day of work, depending on who you ask. Here is what a thorough professional interior clean usually involves, and why each step matters.

1. Dry debris removal

Everything loose comes out first: floor mats, rubbish and personal items. We then use compressed air and detailing brushes to blow dust out of seams, vents and under seats before a full vacuum, including the boot and seat rails.

2. Hard surfaces

Dashboards, consoles, door cards and cup holders collect dust, body oils and sticky residue. A diluted interior cleaner and soft brushes lift the grime, and steam helps loosen anything stuck in textured plastics without soaking delicate electronics.

3. Fabric seats and carpets

This is where hot-water extraction makes the biggest difference. Cleaning solution is worked into the fabric, then extracted along with the dirt it has loosened. It removes far more than surface shampooing and is particularly effective on food and drink spills.

Some stains, such as dyes, bleach marks or very old spills, can be permanent. A good detailer will tell you honestly before starting.

4. Leather care

Leather needs a gentler approach. We use a pH-appropriate leather cleaner and a soft brush to lift dirt from the grain, then apply a conditioner that helps keep the hide supple and reduces the chance of cracking.

5. Glass, screens and finishing

Interior glass often has a hazy film from plastics off-gassing in the heat. It’s cleaned with a dedicated glass cleaner and fresh towels. Touch screens are cleaned with a screen-safe product, and plastics are finished with a non-greasy dressing that helps reduce UV fading.

How long does it take?

A thorough interior detail on a typical family car takes two to three hours. Larger vehicles, heavy soiling and pet hair all add time.

Keeping it clean afterwards

  • Use rubber mats in wet months.
  • Keep a small brush and microfibre cloth in the glovebox for quick wipe-downs.
  • Deal with spills promptly; blot rather than rub.
