How Often Should You Detail Your Car?

There is no single answer to how often a car needs detailing. A garaged weekend car and a family SUV that lives outdoors near the beach have very different needs. Still, a simple schedule helps most owners keep their car looking good without overspending.

Every two to three weeks: a proper wash

Regular, gentle washing is the foundation of everything else. Road film, brake dust and bird droppings are much easier to remove when they haven’t had time to bond to the surface.

If your car is parked outdoors, driven on gravel roads or lives near the coast, weekly washes may be worth it. Salt air in particular speeds up corrosion on exposed metal.

Every month or two: a quick interior tidy

A vacuum and wipe-down every month keeps grit from grinding into carpets and stops dust building up on vents and screens. Families and pet owners may want to do this more often.

Every three to six months: decontamination and protection

Even with regular washing, iron particles and tar slowly bond to the paint. Run your fingertips over the bonnet inside a thin plastic bag. If it feels gritty rather than glassy, it’s time for decontamination.

A full detail with clay-bar treatment and a fresh sealant every three to six months keeps the paint smooth and protected.

Every six to twelve months: a deep interior clean

Steam cleaning and hot-water extraction lift the dirt that vacuuming leaves behind. Once or twice a year is enough for most cars, or more often if the cabin sees heavy use.

When it makes sense to correct the paint

Paint correction is not a routine service. Most cars only need it when swirl marks and haze become noticeable, after buying a used car, or before applying a ceramic coating. Good washing habits will stretch the time between corrections considerably.

A simple rule of thumb

  • Wash often and gently.
  • Protect the paint every few months, or coat it once and maintain it.
  • Deep clean the interior once or twice a year.
  • Correct the paint only when it genuinely needs it.

If you’d like a schedule tailored to your car, ask us. Many of our clients book a Maintenance Detail every four to six weeks so their car never drifts far from freshly detailed.
