What happens to your embryos in the first five days

Once your eggs are collected, they spend the next few days in the care of our embryology team. Here is what happens behind the laboratory door.

Day 1: fertilisation check

The morning after collection, embryologists check each egg for signs of normal fertilisation and call you with an update.

Days 2 and 3: cleavage stage

Healthy embryos divide into four, then eight cells. We monitor growth in incubators that mimic the conditions of the body.

Days 5 and 6: blastocyst

By day five, the strongest embryos form a blastocyst with an inner cell mass and an outer layer that will become the placenta. This is usually the best stage for transfer or freezing.
