Undertow started with my right hand pulling slowly away from my chest, as if something was drawing it out to sea. Everything else in the piece grew from that one movement.

We built it over eleven weeks in a borrowed studio, with a composer who recorded the dancers breathing and turned it into the score. Some days we kept thirty seconds. Some days we kept nothing.

The premiere is at The Street Theatre on 28 November. If you come, sit near the front: most of it happens very close to the floor.
