Intrauterine insemination (IUI) places washed, concentrated sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. It is simpler and less costly than IVF, and is often the right first step for unexplained infertility, mild male factor issues or donor sperm treatment.
Who IUI suits
- Couples with open fallopian tubes and regular or medicated ovulation
- Single women and same-sex couples using donor sperm
- Mild sperm concerns that do not require ICSI
Most patients have a scan or two to time the procedure, which itself takes only a few minutes and feels similar to a smear test.
